The European Commission will meet with online gambling experts on Monday (27 February) in light of growing pressure to regulate online gambling rules across the European Union (EU).
The meeting follows the European Parliament’s Report on Online Gambling in the Internal Market and the Commission’s consultation on the subject last year.
The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has welcomed the move, which will “safeguard adequate protection for consumers and at the same time ensure fair and transparent licensing conditions for EU operators,” according to secretary general of EGBA Sigrid Ligné.
Regulators and experts will discuss issues that may be included in an action plan which Michel Barnier, the European commissioner for the internal market, is expected to publish this year.
Some EU members aim to protect their domestic online gambling opportunities from external competitors and have been resistant to the move. There is currently no EU legislation specifically on the online gambling industry.
