Moves in place to legalize gambling in Japan

The Japanese government is for the first time considering opening up its market to casino gambling.  The move is driven by American gambling interests and the success of other casino centers in Asia. The country is also searching for new growth industries to put an end to its economic slump.

A group of 150 lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties of Japan have welcomed proposed legislation that may lead to the legalization of gambling in the country.  Those in favor of legislation aim to submit a bill before the end of June.

According to Takeshi Iwaya, lawmaker from opposition party the Liberal Democratic Party, is pushing for the legalization of gambling in the county, saying it would help promote tourism, encourage business, create jobs, and boost local development.
