The world of Canadian sports betting is heating up

Major talks have been going on this week around Canada and in New York on whether to pass the legislation that would legalize single-game betting.

There are many pros and cons, but the fact remains that it is a potentially groundbreaking change to the Canadian gambling scene. “Those in favour of the bill, including casino owners and gaming associations, say the change would create jobs, generate revenues for government, and help fight illegal offshore gambling”.

However, professional sports leagues such as the NHL, the NBA and Major League Baseball are opposed to legalizing single-game betting because “they argue it will increase the threat of match fixing and undermine fans’ trust in their respective on-field products”.

Conservative Senator Linda Frum told the Senate legal affairs committee “I would like it noted that I am very much in favour of seeing the bill go back to the chamber so that all of our colleagues have the opportunity to comment and debate on it.”

It’s going to be an interseting debate in the world of sports betting.
