Wayne Rooney’s father has been cleared in an investigation of fraud against him, reports The Daily Record. Rooney Snr was suspected of being part of fraudulent betting on the outcomeof soccer games.
The famous footballer’s father was arrested with eight other men, including Motherwell mid-fielder Steve Jennings, in October 2011. The arrest was based on the suspicion that this group were conspiring to defraud due to their suspicious betting habits. Rooney’s uncle was also among the suspects held in the operation.
Obviously it would look rather suspicious when footballers and their families suddenly start winning big on matches that they influence the outcome of, either directly or through their insider connections. The suspicious wagers were placed on a 2010 game between Motherwell and Hearts.
The group has now been cleared of all charges and police report no further investigations into the matter. Rooney’s family are quite the source of scandal though, as one drama ends another begins: his younger brother has recently been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
