Spanish online gambling industry gets a boost

A competitive online gambling market will soon be a reality in Spain, according to the Spanish National Gambling Commission. The commission announced last week that it will start issuing online gambling licenses at the end of March, three months earlier than its anticipated June deadline.

Potential license holders have welcomed the new deadline, which cuts short an earlier postponement to the issuing of licenses.  After months of debate, new gambling laws to open up the market in the country were approved in 2011.

Despite being saddled with a 25 percent gross profits tax, one of the highest in the European Union, new licensees will gain an important foothold in one of Europe’s largest economies.
